How do you get your Cosmetology license in NY? Do you have to go to Beauty School?
I work as an apprentice manicurist but I also know how to do waxing, coloring, cutting, styling, makeup and etc. under the supervision of my boss.
I wanted to know if I can just take the test without going to beauty school or it's a must that I have to go to beauty school and do the hour requirements that I see are listed?
Thank you

Would you be comfortable receiving spa treatments from a male aesthetician?
I am a young male looking to get into the field of aesthetics. I am just curious if women and men would be comfortable receiving spa treatments (facials, waxing, relaxation massage, manicures, pedicures, etc...) from a male aesthetician.

Brazilian Wax Gone Bad–Stitches & ER Before Wedding?
Should I ask for compensation? How much?
I had a Brazilian wax one week before my wedding as a honeymoon surprise. I chose and upscale salon that was very reputable in my area. The esthetician who did my waxing was very upset that day after learning a long time client of her's had just passed away. She was in tears, but said she'd be fine as she had cleared her schedule after my appointment.
She wasn't being careful and forgot to pull the skin taught before pulling the strip, and consequently caused a skin tear. I had a two inch long tear in between my labia minora and labia majora. I went to my doctor, and she sent me to the ER. I was treated at the ER where I had 6 or 7 stitches. The whole thing was very painful. The wound was somewhat healed on my honeymoon night. It was terrible.
My question is, how much compensation should I ask for? The salon knows they were negligent, and is willing to settle when I come up with a figure. Not only was it painful and embarrassing, but it was also traumatic.
I have no underlying medical conditions, and I take no medications that could explain why the tear occured. I am perfectly normal and healthy

How do I get started in Medical Aesthetics?
I am an Esthetician, so I've learned how to do basic facials, micros, peels, waxing, lashes, make-up, etc. But I want to get into lasers, hair removal, botox, high strength chemical peels. I'm in Chicago, there isn't a school for it and all the places want an Esthetician with experience so where do I get it?

What kind of music should I play while waxing my clients?
I'm an esthetician, and I do waxing (brows, legs, bikini, etc) - I'm looking for music to play that's upbeat while I'm ripping their hair out. Any ideas?
Should I stay in the beauty industry or go to med school?
Okay...I think I know the answer to this already, but I don't want to believe it. I currently work as an esthetician giving facials, waxing and selling skin care products. I love skin care, however I do not make enough money as an esthetician working in a small salon. To make good money I would probably have to work in a large upscale salon. I've tried that and didn't like it. It was catty, everything was very strict and controlled, and I worked with all women and a few gay men, i hardly got to make any decisions, and i was bossed around by people who weren't very intelligent and were fake.
my current situation is this: I work in a small salon with men and women and have my own esthetics room. I am quite happy, I get to make a lot of decisions, like the people I work with, etc. The problem is the money...I can't afford to move out of my parents house, as business increases in a year or two I may be able to. However it's never going to be a situation where I am "well off" and I have zero benefits.
I have been contemplating going to med school for dermatology. I am 22, have my bachelor's in psychology and graduated with a 3.78 gpa. I would have to take more science classes which I could finish in a little over a year while continuing to work. I am a good test taker and think I could do well on the MCAT. The problem is I am not a huge fan of science...I don't like anatomy, chemistry, physics. Should a person like/love these subjects to apply to medical school? They don't interest me very much. Skin care, skin diseases, skin cancer, lasers, botox, acne, etc interests me, but in order to be a derm I would have to go to med school. I can be a little squirmy around blood and guts, but maybe I could get used to it. I want to be successful, I am hard-working and intelligent, medical school does not sound fun to me but the end result may be worth it. Help! Any suggestions???
