Cosmetology or Esthetics? Which program should I take?

Hi there, I am going to start beauty school soon and can't decide which class to enroll in.

I have asked this question before and most of the answers were not that great so I'm hoping a new batch of people might get to my question.

First let me just give you some basic information about the schools in my area. In my state you can NOT offer Esthetics services with a Cosmetology License. I'm saying this because some people had told me to do Cosmetology because "they do it all". Here Cosmetology consists of 80-90% hair, and the rest is mani/pedi, basic facials, and basic waxing like upper lip and brows, and then some of the cosmo schools also touch very lightly on basic makeup. It doesn't go as in depth skin care as the Esty classes here so I'm basically at an either or situation.

Why am I having difficulty choosing? Because I am interested in and love many aspects of both, and also have dislikes about both but basically I could see myself as either a Cosmetoogist or an Esthetician.

The only thing about Cosmetology I don't like is manicure/pedicure...I have 0% interest in it and will only tolerate it because I have to for the Cosmo license.

The only thing about Esthetics I don't like is that it seems like there is less job opportunities, and I still find myself wondering about and wanting to do hair.

Some information about me:

I am male, 23, and have been interested in being a stylist since I was 13 and probably even earlier than that. I didn't really know about Esthiology when I was in highschool and recently discovered it about a year ago when researching cosmetology schools. I instantly became interested and somewhat in love with the idea of becoming an esthetician. Its hard to say which one I'd rather be doing all my life but that's what I want, a specialty...I don't want to take both courses and be dually licensed because I want to have a specialty like either being a stylist or skin care specialist...

So if you are either a cosmo or an esty, please give me som advice on how you chose your program or if you were faced with a similar situation...all advice welcome. I don't know why its been so hard to choose because you'd think one would jump out and be like hello its meee pick meee but it hasn't happened like that...

Anywho im rambling, i thank all of you in advance for your wonderful answers. Thanks so much!

which will be more beneficial when wanting to become a professional makeup artist? cosmo. or esthetics?

okay so ive been wanting to enroll in an esthetics (facial specialist) course for over a yr now. & i was really hoping to enroll this upcoming fall semester but the college i was focusing on told me they werent going to offer the esthetics class this YEAR! I already accepted my financial aid money so i can still forenroll classes just not that one ): i rlly dont want to wait a whole yr so basicly i was wondering if i should just take the cosmotology classes instead even though that takes longer than getting the esthetician certificate....my main career goal is to become a professional makeup artist. thats y i wanted to take the esthetics classes to learn about different skin types....i dont want anything like certification to hold me back wen trying to get makeup jobs in the future...so which will be more beneficial cosmo. license? or esthetics??

Should I go to Cosmetology school or Esthetician school?

Hey everyone...So I have had some pretty bad luck finding any decent answers for my question so hopefully a new bunch of you are looking at this.

I am interested in Cosmetology and Esthiology. I have been interested in Cosmetology and more specifically doing hair cuts color style etc... since I was about 14 and back then didn't know that they even offered Esthetician school. I was young and naieve and thought as a skin care specialist you had to go to med school or something.

ANYWAY recently got into Esthetics and really interested in facials body treatments and waxing (not so much interested in makeup but can get through it for school) and I would then probably get licensed in massage therapy to offer that as a service as well...

So my question is which course should I take and why? I am hoping other cosmetologits/estheticians will answer this telling me either their own experience and if they love or hate their career etc...

Ok now lets get some things straight before you answer my question:
1. I am not going into the industry for the money and to be glitzy and glamorous, I understand it is hard work and I want to make people look and feel good.
2. Do NOT tell me to do Cosmetology because they "do it all" because they don't here. In my city Cosmetology school is 95% hair, 3% nails, and 2% basic facials, eyebrow and upper lip waxing, and depending on the school, maybe some basic makeup. That means I can not work as an Esthetician WITH a Cosmetology license so do not tell me I can when I know for a fact you can't. (Had an earlier answerer tell me this craziness trying to be-little me)
3. I don't want to do both so don't tell me to do both. I want to have my focus be on one main thing like hair, or the massage/facials/waxing etc... I don't want to be running back and froth from the floor to the spa to the floor again...I want one area of focus.

I am really interested in both and am already pretty good at hair...I have been doing mine my friends and family's hair for several years so I know I have a knack for it...I also love Esthetics and feel really...connected to the field and have a feeling like I would do really really well in it but I just don't know which course to take. Both are interesting and both are wonderful careers and need some advice.

Thanks so much in advance!

Should I become a Hair Stylist, Nail Tech, or Esthetician?

Hi there, I'm quitting my job soon to go to school. From a very oung age I have always wanted to do something in the beauty/spa industry. I still feel that I belong there somewhere, but I can't decide on where.

I know becoming a licensed Cosmetologist means I can do either hair or nails if I want to, however. If I choose to be a nail tech I don't want training in something I don't need like hair care...I'd rather take the nail tech specific program.

I like the idea of esthetics because it is basically facials and body wraps as well as some make up application and waxing but after I graduate I don't have to offer waxing if I don't want to do it or make up or whatever...

I'm basically stuck and though I would ask the Y!A community their thoughts on which career is better? Nail tech, Hair styling, or esthetics?

I'm not in it to make loads of money and get rich because I know that in this industry you have to have a passion for what you do and that the money comes from hard work and dedication. I am also not in it because school is fast and I think its an easy career, I feel that I was meant to be a part of the spa/beauty industry and make other people look and feel good.

Any suggestions would be great and if you are a Nail tech, Esthetician, or Stylist, your experience being in the school and around other beauty professionals would be really a big help.

Thanks!!!

Should I do Aesthetician School?

I have been wanting to go to school for esthetics and am wondering if there is any one of you out there who have gone to school for this? Why did you choose this profession? Was there anything that you were uncomfortable with? Did you decide to go into business for yourself or into a salon? I am asking all of these questions because I cannot find anyone in my own city to ask and I want to know I am making the 100% right decision. I feel in my heart its what I want to do but I feel like there are some things I won't enjoy and may not make enough money to have all the important things in life. Thanks in advance! =)

HELP! I've been in Atlanta for a whole month and can't get hired! I'm even trying grocery stores!?

Okay. I'm a licensed esthetician and I've visited every company website within a walking/bussing radius of my apartment in Buckhead since arriving here to join by boyfriend last month. I have 3.5 years of experience and left a job as the lead esthetician at a four diamond resort to come here. I also have hosted at restaurants, worked as a title processor, salon receptionist, retail sales associate, art instructor, and of course i am definitely making sure this experience is reflected in my resume. Yet I am at a loss. I obtained my Georgia esthetics license prior to arriving. After scouring all of the positions available in Atlanta area spas, I ended up hand-delivering and emailing my resume to EVERY day spa, hotel spa, etc. within my area so that they have my information when something becomes available. Then i started looking for open positions and leaving applications on file with anyone and everyone. We're talking bussing tables, retail, receptionist, Target!! I have no pride issues at all, I just want a job! I stalk every single website daily and apply to any new listings i see that i think i may be qualified for. I am unfortunately without a car and so everything has to be walkable or bussable. The only thing i have wondered is if the job market is extra competitive out here. Does anyone have some insight about this city, or why it's so challenging to get an interview?

What are your opinions on being an Esthetician or Massage Therapist in Canada?

Hi, I'm planning to do a two year diploma on either Esthetics or Massage Therapist in Canada. Which one is more in demand? When I look at the job site, there are more jobs for Massage Therapist but I've heard most massage therapists experience a burn out after 2-3 years and it's bad on their bodies.

As for Esthetics...anyone in this line?
