Cosmetology or Esthetics? Which program should I take?
Hi there, I am going to start beauty school soon and can't decide which class to enroll in.
I have asked this question before and most of the answers were not that great so I'm hoping a new batch of people might get to my question.
First let me just give you some basic information about the schools in my area. In my state you can NOT offer Esthetics services with a Cosmetology License. I'm saying this because some people had told me to do Cosmetology because "they do it all". Here Cosmetology consists of 80-90% hair, and the rest is mani/pedi, basic facials, and basic waxing like upper lip and brows, and then some of the cosmo schools also touch very lightly on basic makeup. It doesn't go as in depth skin care as the Esty classes here so I'm basically at an either or situation.
Why am I having difficulty choosing? Because I am interested in and love many aspects of both, and also have dislikes about both but basically I could see myself as either a Cosmetoogist or an Esthetician.
The only thing about Cosmetology I don't like is manicure/pedicure...I have 0% interest in it and will only tolerate it because I have to for the Cosmo license.
The only thing about Esthetics I don't like is that it seems like there is less job opportunities, and I still find myself wondering about and wanting to do hair.
Some information about me:
I am male, 23, and have been interested in being a stylist since I was 13 and probably even earlier than that. I didn't really know about Esthiology when I was in highschool and recently discovered it about a year ago when researching cosmetology schools. I instantly became interested and somewhat in love with the idea of becoming an esthetician. Its hard to say which one I'd rather be doing all my life but that's what I want, a specialty...I don't want to take both courses and be dually licensed because I want to have a specialty like either being a stylist or skin care specialist...
So if you are either a cosmo or an esty, please give me som advice on how you chose your program or if you were faced with a similar situation...all advice welcome. I don't know why its been so hard to choose because you'd think one would jump out and be like hello its meee pick meee but it hasn't happened like that...
Anywho im rambling, i thank all of you in advance for your wonderful answers. Thanks so much!

Eyebrow threading questions? Repost!?
I'm 13 and I'm getting my eyebrows threaded this week and was hoping someone could help me with these questions:
1. How bad does it hurt on a scale of 1-10?
2. Do I bring in an eyebrow shape I like or will the esthetician know what's best?
3. Do they trim your eyebrows like you know brush them up and cut the hair?
4. How old were you when you got your eyebrows either waxed or threaded?

Do you need a license to be a make up artist in California?
In many states you have to have a Cosmetology license or an Esthetician license to perform make up. This however doesn't really make sense to me. Cosmetology is hair, skin and nails. Esthetician is skin but it doesn't really cover make up. Why isn't there just a license to be a make up artist? However I recently read on some websites that California is the only state that doesn't require any type of license to be a make up artist. Everything is based on how well you can do it. I was wondering if this was true. I'm currently a Cosmetology student. I want to be a make up artist though. I feel that I'm wasting my time doing hair everyday when I want to do make up.
Cosmetology school is 9 months to complete. So far I've completed 2 and a half months. I hate it. We practice hair styles on mannequin heads everyday. Make up has never been brought up. That's why I don't want to complete this school if I can attend a 3 month program and move to California to pursue make up artistry.

Should I take the Cosmetology program or the Esthetician program? Help!?
Hi, I am going to go to school for either cosmetology or esthiology.
I don't know which one to go to because both of them are appealing to me and I like how each course sounds.
I have always wanted to enter cosmetology school from a young age and have always had a natural ability to color, cut, and style hair. I have been coloring, cutting, and styling my family and friends hair as well as my own, for several years and have never had any complaints.
I just recently (about 3 months ago) became interested in becomming and Esthetician. I really love the concept of going into work and giving facials, body treatments, and performing waxing services. I would also take classes afterward to get licensed as a massage therapist so i could also offer more variety of massage as opposed to the simple swedish taught in esthetics school.
I've been reading on here a while at similar questions and wanted to clear something up. For those of you telling people to go to cosmetology because they "do it all" that just isn't true. It is true that in cosmetology school you learn the BASICS of nails, facials, and sometimes makeup, but it doesn't teach in depth study like the Esthetician course does and you cannot work as an Esthetician if you have a cosmetology license because it only teaches basic facials... In some smaller towns then perhaps thats the case where you really can do it all, but where I'm from, cosmetology is 95% study of learning cut color and styling techniques and focuses more on nails than on skin care and makeup when they get to those areas. Just wanted to clear it up for anyone still confused about the difference. (mind you some of these questions were from years ago so I guess it doesn't realy matter...just saying)
Anywho, I know that Esthetician services may be more viewed by the general public as "luxury items" and aren't as likely to spend money on that stuff than on a hair cut and color, but Esthetics treatments are really big in the New Age and Spiritualist Universalist community that I don't worry about income (since new age spiritualism is big here) and because I want to do what i love.
That's my main problem, I love it all but don't want to do it all, I want to have one major area of specialty like either hair or esthetic services.
How do I figure out which one is going to be better for me? I know it isn't such a huge deal because i can always go back for the other one, but I'd rather get it right the first time and not be wasting time and money on schooling I dont need.
So anyone who has suggestions? Cosmetologists or Estheticians who absolutely love their jobs or hate them with any adice? All comments that are not nasty and or hateful are welcome!
Thanks soooo much!

Esthetician vs. Facialist Certificates?
Is there a difference between these two? My sister has a facialist certificate, can she be employed as a full body wax specialist? If not, what certificate does she need to work as a full body hair waxer?

Buying Skin Care Tools?
I see it in videos with spas and Esthetician's, their tools that they use. What are they? I know of the blackhead tool that Tweezerman uses and that's not what I'm talking about. Things like this picture: http://blog.reneerouleau.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/lydia_renee_rouleau.jpg The little head wrap to keep their hair out of the work space or the facial sponges. Where do they get them?
Thanks!

Do makeup artists need a cosmetology or esthetician license?
I was wondering if makeup artists in California need to have either a cosmetology license or an esthetics license to work in a salon? I believe that one is required, but my question is if it matters if the required license is of cosmetology or esthetics? See, I want to enroll in a community college, and I am not sure if I should take the esthetician or cosmetology path. I currently wish to focus on learning the basics of hair styling and whatnot, so I know that the ultimate choice would be cosmetology. However, if I decide to take a lean towards doing makeup, I want to have the correct license and knowledge of which would be the better path for that. Which one of those licenses is needed for makeup in a salon, and which would be more beneficial in your opinion? Thanks(:

Should I be embarassed about getting a Brazilian wax?
Ok I'm a 32 yr old mother of 4 who has never been waxed. I usually shave, but am absolutely tired of getting red bumps and ingrown hairs. Im afraid of going to get waxed and having the Esthetician either laugh at me or think "God this chick is hairy". I'm super shy, so how should I go about all this. Please help easy my anxiety.
